Halloween Decorations

The witch goes on the window. The costume goes on a child who wants to be looked at twice.

What to know before you pick one

October is the month we get the most letters about. Two things decide whether a Halloween piece works: it has to read from the sidewalk after dark, and it has to survive a wet night without anyone going outside to rescue it.

So the witch mounts on glass rather than grass. Suction hooks hold her against a window or a wall, which keeps her off the lawn where the sprinklers and the leaf blowers live. She lights from inside, so she reads from the street once the sun drops.

The costume is the other half of the night. It comes as seven pieces, and the scythe breaks into three so it fits in a car and in a hallway.

The next season is closer than it looks.
